The company was born in 1889 by a group of intellectuals led by Carducci. As is clearly stated in Article 1 of the Statute, it intended to "protect and promote the Italian language and culture in the world, taking anywhere up the feeling of Italian, to rekindle the spiritual ties of compatriots abroad with their motherland and feeding among foreigners love and worship for the Italian culture. " The founders
they named the Association to Dante Alighieri to confirm that that name had been accomplished in the linguistic unity of the nation, then politically recognized six centuries later.
From the beginning the Company's operations will be addressed within national borders and abroad. As is natural, however, is that in this second exercise the best cultural activities defined in Article 1 of the Statute. It is defined through the expansion and of its Committees Abroad which can outline the evolution of the "Dante" as a point of cultural production and dissemination.
At the Company's operations came on the impulse of the first president, Ruggiero Bongos (1889-1895), the establishment of Italian language courses for migrants who went abroad in search of work.
In this first period the "Dante" was his first foreign Committees in those countries where there was an Italian colony of some importance, especially in Europe: Switzerland (Geneva, 1894, Zurich, 1895), Belgium (Liège, 1894) and France (Marseille, 1895) where the Italians were emigrating in search of work. Committees also arise in Greece e in Turchia, e anzi in questi Paesi si costituirono i più antichi sodalizi della Società fuori dai confini della patria: il primo Comitato estero della “Dante” fu fondato a Salonicco nel 1890 e l’anno successivo nacque quello di Smirne, seguito nel 1895 da quello di Costantinopoli.
In seguito, sotto la guida del secondo presidente Pasquale Villari, (1896-1901), i Comitati esteri della “Dante” si estesero ad altri Paesi del Mediterraneo (Costantinopoli, Turchia, 1895; Il Cairo, Egitto, 1896; Alessandria, Egitto, 1896; Suez, Egitto, 1898), della Francia (Marsiglia, 1895; Parigi, 1898; Montecarlo, 1899; Tolone, 1902) e dell’Europa settentrionale e orientale (Bucarest, Romania, 1986; Odessa, Ucraina,1899).
In quest’epoca comincia l’espansione della “Dante” anche al di fuori dell’Europa, e nuovi Comitati vengono fondati in alcune città dell’America del nord (New York, 1897; Boston, 1901) e soprattutto del sud (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1896; Montevideo, Uruguay, 1896; Iquique, Cile, 1896; Rosario, Argentina, 1897; Caracas, Venezuela, 1989; San Paolo, Brasile, 1899). Il primato del Comitato più lontano dalla madrepatria in questo periodo spetta a quello di Melbourne (Australia), fondato nel 1896.
Ai primi del Novecento, sotto la guida del suo terzo presidente Luigi Rava (1902-1906), la Società si espande più markedly in countries very far geographically and culturally by national borders: it increases the number of committees in North America to reach Canada (Toronto, 1905). Committees in the same age born in countries where it was affirming the Italian colonial expansion (Benghazi, Libya 1906), or reinforce existing ones (Tripoli, Libya, 1898).
